Earlier this year, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said politicians holding several portfolios or positions in the government should be “morally responsible” and opt for only one pension scheme, but the decision is up to them.
In Malaysia, a person who holds a position in Parliament, state assembly, federal cabinet or state executive council (exco) - simultaneously or at different times in their career - can draw a pension from each of those positions.
But how much is that in ringgit? Using open data, this article attempts to estimate the figure awaiting MPs elected in the last two general elections once they retire.
To note, MPs refer to both members of the Dewan Rakyat and the Dewan Negara (also known as senators).
