Is there a way to get people to have more babies?

Why have Malaysia’s total fertility rates dipped under replacement rate, and does it even matter?

Like many couples, Jonathan Raj and Melissa Tan started dating as college students.

But it would be a decade before they were ready to settle down, spending much of their 20s focusing on their careers.

After some fertility challenges, at 35, they welcomed their son, Jared, and decided he would be their only child.

“Say we were younger, I think we would have maybe tried for a second but the age factor really made us hesitant to have another one,” Raj says.

A pivotal reason is the higher risk of health complications for mother and child, when women give birth aged 35 and above.

“Even when we had our son, when I was 35, we were so worried and went through several tests. We didn’t want to go through that whole situation all over again for a second child,” Tan says.
